John is a Partner in Maynard Nexsen’s Insurance practice group.
John has experience litigating high-stakes, complex business cases. He handles cutting-edge litigation in areas such as health care, consumer class actions, ERISA and eminent domain, taking cases to trial as needed. He has also represented clients in unfair competition, RICO, entertainment law and real estate fraud actions.
John serves as first chair on civil trials in high-stakes matters. As counsel for the plaintiff, he has recovered over $47 million for his clients; as counsel for the defense, he has never lost a jury trial. Presenting a complex case in a way that makes sense to jurors is his specialty.
Recognized by Best Lawyers and Los Angeles Magazine as one of the top lawyers in Southern California, John is a respected authority in ERISA litigation.
John holds a J.D. from the University of California Los Angeles School of Law. He earned his B.A. in Philosophy, cum laude, from the University of California Los Angeles.

John has obtained over $47 million in total compensation for clients, including:
- $21.9 million jury verdict in a condemnation trial representing Lehman Brothers.
- $7.9 million jury verdict in a real estate fraud trial involving beachfront property in Malibu.
- $8.6 million settlement on the eve of trial in a condemnation suit representing ConocoPhillips.
- $7.8 million settlement in a condemnation suit representing The Mills Corporation.
- $1.7 million settlement on behalf of property owners in a case involving the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' project to enlarge a water storage facility in central California.
- Achieved total defense verdict against hospital system seeking over +$26M in damages for alleged underpayment of claims; case affirmed on appeal in a reported decision (Long Beach Memorial Medical Center v. Kaiser Foundation Health Plan, 71 Cal. App. 5th 323 (2021).)
- Achieved total defense verdict in health care subscriber's $8 million insurance bad faith lawsuit.
- Achieved total defense verdict in an employee's $9.1 million fraud and breach of contract claim.
- Achieved total defense verdict in $1.2 million breach of contract trial brought against a school district.
