Overview
Steven is a Shareholder in Maynard Nexsen’s Real Estate & Financial Services Practice.
Steven’s practice focuses on a wide range of real estate matters across industrial, office, residential, retail and timberland sectors. His experience includes representing property owners, developers, operators, investment managers, and institutional investors in structuring joint ventures, partnerships, private equity funds, real estate syndications, and tax-deferred exchanges in connection with the acquisition, development, financing, construction, leasing, management, and disposition of real estate projects across the United States. He also advises clients on complex tax issues pertaining to real estate, including acquisition and disposition planning, capital structuring, like-kind exchanges, real estate investment trusts (REITs), and other tax-sensitive matters.
In the timberland sector, Steven has provided significant representation with respect to the acquisition, financing, management, and disposition of, as well as numerous ancillary matters related to the ownership and management of, large tract timber properties. Steven regularly works with and represents one of the premier TIMOs in the United States in connection with his timberland practice.
Steven is also a Certified Public Accountant licensed in the State of Alabama. Prior to entering the practice of law, Steven practiced as a CPA for six years in the Audit & Assurance group at Deloitte & Touche LLP, serving on the audits of several large public companies throughout the Southeast. During his final year of law school, Steven co-edited Real Estate Handbook: Land Laws of Alabama, 9th Edition (with Robert McCurley, Jr.) and Alabama Legislation, 8th Edition (with the Alabama Law Institute and Robert McCurley, Jr.).
