Pro Bono Champion: Brian Pearce - The Down Syndrome Network of Greater Greensboro
The Down Syndrome Network of Greater Greensboro is a local to Greensboro non-profit committed to enriching the lives of individuals with Down Syndrome by connecting and educating families and promoting awareness in our community. As part of this mission, the Down Syndrome Network of Greater Greensboro has formed and opened The STAR. The STAR: Supported Therapies and Recreation is a center that offers free therapies, recreational, social, and educational events, inclusive opportunities and more to individuals with disabilities throughout the greater Greensboro Area. Featuring a sensory gym, fully accessible kitchen, and a comfortable, welcoming vibe, The STAR is quickly becoming a vibrant, joyful part of Greensboro's dis- and differently-abled community.
As a parent of a child on the autism spectrum and a member of the Greensboro special needs community, Brian Pearce was excited when he learned about the STAR and the great work that the Down Syndrome Network of Greater Greensboro is doing there not for just people with down syndrome, but for all persons with special needs. Knowing that this was such a valuable resource for a community that his family is a part of, Brian reached out to contacts that he had with the Down Syndrome Network of Great Greensboro to let them know he would love to help with the STAR if they ever needed him. Recently, the Down Syndrome Network of Greater Greensboro decided it wanted to take the STAR to another level by purchasing the space where it operated. Upon making this decision, Brian was contacted to see if he would help with this acquisition. Brian jumped at the chance to become a part of the great work that they are doing, and he can happily say they they are now looking forward to an upcoming closing that will ensure that the STAR remains a long term asset for families like mine thanks to the Down Syndrome Network of Greater Greensboro.
Brian T. Pearce is a member in Nexsen Pruet’s Greensboro, North Carolina office, where he concentrates his practice on real estate matters. As an “Autism Dad” himself, Brian is constantly looking for ways he can get involved to make life easier on families and children living with autism. This passion has led Brian to become involved with the local autism groups and has taken Brian to Raleigh where he has actively lobbied for autism insurance reform. In 2015, Autism Speaks named Brian as its Parent Advocate of the Year.
